United 2, Phunion 2

Fuck you United. The red kits suck. Wearing them at home is a disgrace. Fuck you United. The red kits suck. Wearing them at home is a disgrace. Fuck you United. The red kits suck. Gorgeous night at the stadium though, though crappy result.

Both this guy and this guy address both the similarities with the previous home 2-2 tie versus Houston and last night's technical aspects. I didn't see the Houston game but I've seen more than enough games this year to expect defensive breakdowns for the remainder of the season. Bless Clyde Simms for his years of service, his tires are bald and he's out of gas, and in front of one rookie central defender or two (White plus newly acquired Brandon McDonald last night with Kitchen shifted to the right), Simms is no longer good enough, strong enough, fast enough. Those huge gaps that open directly in front of Hamid are not solely the fault of the back line.

Not to pin it all on Simms. White is a rookie, Kitchen is a rookie, Woolard is statue (why did United cut Julius James? Tell me!) Both Davies and Wolff failed to fall back into defense even when Phunion had extended possession in United's end (and that might explain partly why Olsen subbed out Davies for Brettschneider relatively early, though Davies is a walking hammie ready to sproing, the diver). Pontius and Najar were run at and past on the wings - the last Phunion goal can be directly attributed to Pontius' failure to cut off an open cross into the box. Perhaps I'm overvaluing both Pontius' and Najar's defensive capabilities, but if this is how good they are that's one problem (and not readily fixable), if neither is working as hard as he can, that's another (and in theory better) problem that Saint Benny better fix fast.

Actually, that's true for the defense as a whole. Whatever combination of inexperience, disorganization, lack of talent or lack of effort, adding De Rossario's offensive upgrade will be neutralized until United's defense isn't backing up on its heels expecting to be scored on. Opponents are going to run the left wing at Najar and (yesterday) Kitchen, run down the right wing at Pontius and whatever horrible left back United deploys on any given night, and cross to open men in United's disorganized center. Until it's fixed, United's a point a game club.

Had a blast. Gorgeous night.

The red kits suck. It's a disgrace to wear them at home.

  1. Aesthetics are what they are and you're of course entitled to yours, but the depth of your retardation on the red kit issue is astonishing. The funny bit is...compare your feelings on Maryland teams' unis. Comedy gold.

You've got it slightly wrong. The tactical approach is worth more than what you give it here; until the early bunkering stops, it's all Saint Benny's fault. They're not backing up expecting to be scored on; they're backing up expecting not to, which adds a dimension of Einsteinian insanity to the whole thing.

As for Najar and Pontius...an organized center means a lot. You've noted Najar's not bad defensively when he puts in the effort. White had a deeply suspect game last night, and McDonald--who I thought made some effort to direct traffic, and didn't look bad to me--is brand new. I'm thinking maybe what needs sorting is the wings, not the center, and that the real center is something like McDonald-Jacovic.

But all of that's trivial compared to the tactical approach, and it's appalling that Saint Benny isn't getting it.

  2. Heh! for everybody!

I don't see how I'm inconsistent at all. I give Maryland grief for wearing black when their color is red and United grief for wearing red when their color is black.
