they're not going to let you sit at a front table at some cafe in Europe in the mid-afternoon sun

RELENTLESS AS THE TARANTULA

Charles Bukowski

they're not going to let you
sit at a front table
at some cafe in Europe
in the mid-afternoon sun.
if you do, somebody's going to
drive by and
spray your guts with a
submachine gun.

they're not going to let you
feel good
for very long
anywhere.
the forces aren't going to
let you sit around
fucking-off and
relaxing.
you've got to go
their way.

the unhappy, the bitter and
the vengeful
need their
fix - which is
you or somebody
anybody
in agony, or
better yet
dead, dropped into some
hole.

as long as there are
humans about
there is never going to be
any peace
for any individual
upon this earth or
anywhere else
they might
escape to.

all you can do
is maybe grab
ten lucky minutes
here
or maybe an hour
there.

something
is working toward you
right now, and
I mean you
and nobody but
you.

  1. I started out with his short stories and novels and they kind of made me not like him at all (undergrad dudes who made excuses for rape references probably didn't help), though sometimes his poetry does hit me, like this one.

  2. I hope the U.K. police will remember to shout "Death to the Shah" when they storm Ecuador's Embassy.

  3. Friendlies are Important. That's how the Angles are numero trois.

I ain't watching that fucking cop video. If there was karma, and there ain't, a pack of wild dogs would attack that fucker, leave him for dead, but since he wasn't dead, they'd come back and bleed him a bit more. Repeat as necessary.

  4. I don't care what you say, Superunknown was and remains awesome. Most of their other stuff doesn't hold up as well.. and dunno that a reunion is necessary, but who am I to judge?

  5. Heh, give me *Transmissions from the Satellite Heart* or *Clouds Taste Metallic.* We're never gonna agree, but thanks for playing!

  6. Of course that shooting caused a shitstorm. Fox News was reporting about how "liberals" never say a word when their folks do something bad. Etc., etc., etc.

  8. Glad you like. I remember you commenting that you like Bukowski.

This shooting seems to me surprisingly unshitstormy, or at least unshitstormier in the physical and digital places I daily inhabit than the last few shootings (which weren't all that shitstormy themselves compared to...) Maybe it was because it was just a rent-a-cop guarding millionaire lobbyists on K St (or thereabouts) instead of multiple parishioners in a Christian church in Iowa, but I'd written something along the lines after the Sikh shooting, imagine the shitstorm if... But yes, I know it's not close to an exact if.
