Thirty-Two Years Ago Today

I remember exactly where I was, who I was with, what we were doing, when I heard. If I rarely play a Beatles or Lennon solo song (since so much did I once play those songs over and over I can hear any song I want anytime I want in my head ), and while time and biographies (and my cynicism in service of my complicity) have diminished my (youthfully naive) image of Lennon as hero, hearing on the radio that Lennon was shot was such a kaboom the kaboom needs remembering every year.

  1. I too recall hearing about Lennon's murder. (Heck, I remember when JFK was shot). I've only read one biography of Lennon, but it was a doozy - Albert Goldman's - it's possible it was TOO cynical. Maybe I should read another - any suggestions for a more balanced approach?

That's John Kerry, erstwhile antiwar activist, with John Lennon in the video. Now there is someone who has betrayed every ideal he allegedly followed. Oh well. People are people, and have both divine and demonic tendencies. May the Creative Forces of the Universe have mercy on our souls, if any.

  2. Sorry, been busy. I've not read any of Lennon's biographies, just what's been written about Lennon and his biographies. I don't think badly of Lennon at all, I just don't have the hero worship for him now that I had at the time he was shot. That's on me, not Lennon.
