THE PEOPLE OF THE OTHER VILLAGE

Thomas Lux

hate the people of this village
and would nail our hats
to our heads for refusing in their presence to remove them
or staple our hands to our foreheads
for refusing to salute them
if we did not hurt them first: mail them packages of rats,
mix their flour at night with broken glass.
We do this, they do that.
They peel the larynx from one of our brothers’ throats.
We devein one of their sisters.
The quicksand pits they built were good.
Our amputation teams were better.
We trained some birds to steal their wheat.
They sent to us exploding ambassadors of peace.
They do this, we do that.
We canceled our sheep imports.
They no longer bought our blankets.
We mocked their greatest poet
and when that had no effect
we parodied the way they dance
which did cause pain, so they, in turn, said our God
was leprous, hairless.
We do this, they do that.
Ten thousand (10,000) years, ten thousand
(10,000) brutal, beautiful years.

  1. 0)those are interesting looking eyes

1)this is the first time i've encountered the 'ratface' sobriquet for a candidate this season - nevertheless i had an immediate association

1a)i am the only one who is slightly uncomfortable that this candidate's spouse [assuming that i have correctly understood you] has adopted the candidate's surname as their own?

2)my cash contributions to brother bernie continue, even as i select as my second preference magnanimous mike, who gets things done

3)at the chinese grocery store yesterday i bought 'umbrella cookies' - they are an unsweetened spiced cracker, it turns out - not bad, in small doses

    http://www.asiangrocerystore.com.au/nice-choice-umbrella-cookies.html

4)umbrella reminds me of 'bus stop' by the hollies - and then i think of my favorite song of theirs, 'look through any window'

5)something good happen - maybe soon
maybe next week - maybe next june

  2. So there was a record low turnout for the Iowa primary. DNC running true to course. Doesn't bode well for getting rid of Humpty Dumpty in the upcoming "election". Butttiggiegg does look like Alfred, but I thought he looked a bit more like the Howdy Doodie puppet. BBuutigiegh said this, "If there was a pill I could take that would make me straight I would take it before you could give me a glass of water". I really don't know what to make of that. What does he mean? Will they call him a self-hating gay? It just sounds a bit off to me. Kind of a weird thing to say. But this is the weirdest election I've ever seen. I'm actually enjoying it instead of groaning in agony. Not that I think this will end well. What I'm enjoying is seeing the Clintonite centrist asshole Democratic so-called leadership squirm and panic at the prospect of Bernie attaining the presidency. I'd really like to see them eat shit for a change instead of dishing it out.

  3. The author of the pro-incompetence-theory "Bullshit Economy" piece lays out a jaw-droppingly suggestive (and suspicious) web of connections... the kind of suggestive connections that usually trigger investigations into possible conspiracy... then, erm, goes on to pivot RIGHT back to the (much more comfortable) incompetence theory... without putting even a little bit of work into discounting the plausibility of conspiracy? The explanatory power of this sort of spin isn't even what I'd call half-assed.

"Shadow is a subsidiary of ACRONYM, a nonprofit with lots of connections to the Democratic consultancy, including veterans of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and David Plouffe, the Obama campaign manager who sits on the ACRONYM board. MSNBC’s Chris Hayes asked Plouffe on a late-night panel about his participation, and as he swiveled in his chair uncomfortably he disclaimed any knowledge of Shadow or the app.

Similarly, ACRONYM issued a statement positioning itself as a mere investor in Shadow, without knowledge of their inner workings. But last year, ACRONYM announced it was “launching” Shadow, as part of an effort to help Democrats “win” the internet and run better campaigns. The head of ACRONYM, Tara McGowan, is married to a Pete Buttigieg strategist.

All this doublespeak is a hallmark of the bullshit economy. Your mind doesn’t have to travel to the nether regions of conspiracy, but you can hardly blame people for doing so."

Huh? "Hallmark of the bullshit economy" or not, this sort of thing is more often a hallmark of conspiracy (within and outside of the nether regions). Am I supposed to be incapable of seeing that despite the "knowing" tone of the author's rhetoric?

  4. speaking of the singing group the hollies, as i did in an earlier comment - actress carrie-ann moss, who is currently filming matrix movie 4, was named after the hollies song - which, interestingly enough, was written by graham nash about his crush on marianne faithful - he didn't want to be so obvious as to use her real name in the song

robert louis stevenson's 'happy thought' comes to mind

The world is so full of a number of things,
I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings.

and speaking of a number of things, and being happy - thomas hardy wrote 'lines to a movement in mozart's e-flat symphony'

    Show me again the time
    When in the Junetide's prime
We flew by meads and mountains northerly! -
Yea, to such freshness, fairness, fulness, fineness, freeness,
    Love lures life on.

    Show me again the day
    When from the sandy bay
We looked together upon the pestered sea! -
Yea, to such surging, swaying, sighing, swelling, shrinking,
    Love lures life on.

    Show me again the hour
    When by the pinnacled tower
We eyed each other and feared futurity! -
Yea, to such bodings, broodings, beatings, blanchings, blessings,
    Love lures life on.

    Show me again just this:
    The moment of that kiss
Away from the prancing folk, by the strawberry-tree! -
Yea, to such rashness, ratheness, rareness, ripeness, richness,
    Love lures life on.

    Begun November 1898.

Beyond that, you know, I in Washington grew up in a very complex situation. I don’t know what view people have of me, but I grew up in what was – D.C. when D.C. was known as C.C., or Chocolate City. It was a mostly black city, run by a local black power structure with a strong black middle class, and I grew up in a black neighborhood. And I kind of saw apartheid firsthand, where I saw how a small white minority actually controlled the city from behind the scenes. And then, you know, and I saw that reality, and then I went to school across town in the one white ward to a private school, and I got to know some of the children of the kind of mostly Democratic Party elite. And so I saw both sides of the city. And it was through that other side, and also my parents’ connection to the Clintons, that I — I mean, I barely interacted with the Clintons. I’ve had very minimal interaction with them ever.

But I did get to meet Chelsea Clinton once. And you know, for all my reservations about the Clintons or what they were, I thought you know, she was kind of an admirable figure at that time. She was a — she was a kid, she was an adolescent who was being mocked on “Saturday Night Live” because she was going through an awkward phase. She went to school down the street at Sidwell Friends, and I met her at a White House Christmas party; she was really friendly and personable. And you know, since then, I’ve watched her grow into adulthood and become a complete kind of replication of the monstrous political apparatus that her family has set up, without really charting her own path. She just basically inherited the reign of the Clinton Foundation and Clinton Global Initiative. She does paid talks for Israel. Her husband Marc Mezvinsky, he gambled on Greece’s debt along with Lloyd Blankfein, the CEO of Goldman Sachs. You know, the squid fish. I mean, there’s just — I mean, as a young person, seeing someone of my generation grow up and follow that path, do nothing to carve out her own space — it just absolutely disgusts me.

And now Hillary Clinton is still there! She won’t go away! She’s not only helped fuel this Russiagate hysteria that’s plunged us into a new Cold War, but she’s trying to destroy the hopes and dreams of millions of young people who are saddled with endless debt by destroying Bernie Sanders.
