  1. hypothetically, w.h. auden might have written something like

    Excess in the Commonweal

    Within the shuttered optics of your gaze,
    I find a love—not vague, but strictly mapped;
    The deeper mind descends through inner maze,
    The more it finds the consciousness is trapped
    In more than it can hold. The circuits fail;
    This surplus light makes every reason pale.

    We drift upon the temporal, sluggish flood,
    From life to life, an endless, bored migration;
    Geography is nothing to the blood,
    Nor is the heart’s intended destination.
    The world is laid, a frosted, sugary prize:
    Eat, if you must, but spare your weary eyes.

    Mount me upon a disc of silver light,
    To prove the spirit’s heavy chains are broken;
    Grant me the ubiquity of sight,
    Then return me where the common words are spoken—
    For though the cosmos blazes in its greed,
    It’s four o'clock, and tea is what I need.

    The more I exist, the less I claim to grasp;
    The ego thins as brilliance gathers pace.
    I stumble at the heavy, golden clasp
    Of love that shines from every public face.

    It is too much; this unrationed, holy store
    Is more than any mortal bargained for.

    or how about a sonnet that might have been written in the mid-1800s:

    Sonnet: The Unattainable Surfeit

    Upon the crystal mirror of thine eye,

    I trace the map of love’s celestial grace;

    The more I probe where inner shadows lie,

    The more of wonder wakes within that space.

    This luminous tide o’erwhelms my fainting soul,

    A radiance cast from thy bright, spirit-fire;

    I cannot grasp the vast and shining whole,

    Nor stem the current of this strange desire.

    We drift as leaves upon the stream of years,

    Ignoring maps of where we fain would dwell;

    Though all the world a frosted feast appears,

    Distrust the sweet that lures with heavy spell.

    The more I live, the less my mind may know,

    Beneath this light that blinds the world below.

    how about in the style of little richard?

    To get that authentic **Little Richard** energy we have to strip away the "inner journey" and turn it into a high-octane, piano-pounding shout.

    Imagine the tempo is at 170 BPM, there’s a saxophone screaming in the background, and every other line ends with a "WOOOO!"

    ### It’s All Too Much (The Macon, Georgia Mix)

    **[Intro]**
    (Piano glissando)
    1-2-3-4!
    A-wop-bop-a-loo-mop-a-lop-bam-boom!

    **[Verse 1]**
    Well, I look in your eyes and I see my soul!
    The more I get in, I lose all control!
    It’s too much! (Too much!)
    Yeah, it’s too much! (Too much!)
    Well, your love is shinin’ like a bright neon light,
    Everything you do, well, you do it so right!

    **[Chorus]**
    It’s all too much for me to take!
    The way you wobble, the way you shake!
    The whole wide world is a birthday cake,
    So gimme a piece—but goodness sake!
    Don’t give me too much!
    (WOOOO!)

    **[Verse 2]**
    Well, we’re floatin’ down the river, just-a you and me!
    Don’t matter where we’re goin’, that’s the way it should be!
    It’s too much! (Too much!)
    I said it’s too much! (Too much!)
    You got me spinnin’ like a top on a string,
    I’m crazy for your love, baby, that’s my thing!

    **[Bridge]**
    Put me on the sun, let me burn, burn, burn!
    I’m a free-wheelin’ daddy with a lot to learn!
    I’m everywhere, baby, I’m all over town,
    Now get me home for tea 'fore the sun goes down!
    Hurry up, baby! (WOOOO!)

    **[Outro]**
    The more I am, the less I know!
    The more I get, the more I GO!
    It’s too much!
    I tell you it’s too much!
    Shut up!
    (Big finish on the drums)

    The "Penniman" Polish

    * **The "Tea" Line:** To make "Home for tea" work in a 50s Rock & Roll context, you have to sing it with a wink—as if it’s a cheeky excuse to get back to the house for some "private time."

    * **The Cake:** Instead of a psychedelic metaphor, it becomes a literal, frantic demand for a "piece" of the action.

  2. speaking of one of the earlier george songs from the beatles, "think for yourself" - the following is a true story - only the names have been changed

    yesterday I heard from my niece "ellen" – whose father "bill" is eligible for canadian citizenship by descent, because HIS father "douglas" was born in a province in eastern canada - bill has not taken the steps necessary to get the citizenship certificate, unlike myself and our brother "derek" - ellen wonders if she can get Canadian citizenship despite this

    looking into the topic, i was a bit surprised to learn that, as a result of quite recent changes in canadian law, she can – a law that became effective on dec 15, 2025 – bill c-3 – removed the first generation limit on citizenship by descent, and expanded the pool of those eligible to those born by that date - a wrinkle is that persons who are born after that date must show their parent had at least three cumulative years of living in canada prior to their birth - in ellen's case, this means that while her daughter "lily" is also already a canadian citizen, any other children ellen might have prior to living in canada for three years will not be

    ellen lives in texas, and her parents bill and amelia are republicans and probably christian nationalists, although i have not discussed religious issues with them enough to be sure - better to avoid so sensitive a topic – i know they are biblical literalists - so it was a little surprising to hear of an interest by ellen to move to the great multicultural north - she is a graduate of liberty university, founded by jerry falwell, so it is reasonable to think that her views may have changed some - one could even say 'evolved' - since her undergraduate days - she is now in her late thirties - i last saw her in person at her wedding, well over a decade ago - on that occasion i got into a loud but not quite physical argument with bill's oldest friend at the wedding, a frat brother from university of new hampshire - i said "edward snowden" [his real name, actually] was a patriot, the other guy said he was a traitor - as stated, this was over a decade ago - considering my mentioning this to constitute a circling back to the "think for yourself" theme
