The Cyclone Fence of Buts Surrounds the Soccer Field of What If
Deadest Blog Days of Summer, the days surrounding July 4th, so I am compelled to post (and to post ahead of this coming Thursday when I post one of two posts a year not tagged My Complicity) to see if this can be the least read post of the calendar year (which can't be determined until I post over Thanksgiving Weekend in November, the closest competition). Also too, this *has* to be typed today: I hope Belgium beats the USMNT 10 to fucking 0 tonight
Did anyone think Dump wouldn't taint the World Cup? I sat in the conference room on the top floor of the library I work in that overlooks the Potomac above Key Bridge last Saturday afternoon and for fifteen minutes watched Dump's vanity show of military flyovers that squandered tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars and thought to myself, how strange he hasn't caused a sensationally embarrassing scandal at the World Cup as yet, et viola, the Dumpiest, most United States of Assholes fine metaphors abounding scandal. Ten to fucking Nothing tonight, please please please my Lord Diablo Etcheverry
One of those is me in a good mood, the other me in a bad mood, I don't know which is which. Pochettino must know the hell that awaits Balogun (a birthright citizen (who's playing for the USMNT solely because he stood no chance of making his preferred England squad), did Dump know?) in every European stadium he plays in and in the European football press the rest of his career if Balogun plays tonight regardless whether Belgium wins 10-0, please Lord Diablo Etcheverry, and imagine how much worse it will be if he scores the determining goal. Imagine Pochettino doing the honorable thing and benching Balogun the entire game and Belgium wins 10-0, please Lord Diablo Etcheverry, and Dump's shitfit, laugh. Not holding my breath on Pochettino doing the honorable thing, mind, would like to be wrong (I bet Balogun won't start but will be brought in as a second half sub when the USMNT is already down 7-0, Lord Diablo Etcheverry willing). Lord Diablo, I was X-bingeing yesterday, the world's a mess it's in my kiss
1/more episodes in the anecdotes of a wayfaring acquaintance, this time interacting with talking apes instead of turingtestpassing NICS - at a family reunion held in a midwestern state, one named in honour of the population displacement project of my english-speaking ancestors - on my way back from this event spouse and self drove past the location of a historic occasion
2/while in the midwest, to a cousin of approximately my age, and her husband, i told the story of my particular paperback copy of warren hern's book homo ecophagus: a deep diagnosis to save the earth -
table of contents available at https://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/mono/10.4324/9781003314950/homo-ecophagus-warren-hern
how on the basis of documentary, physical, and circumstantial evidence we can reliably conclude that:
it was inscribed by the author to elissa slotkin, former CIA analyst/ then congresswoman/now u.s. senator in denver, perhaps at an occasion also attended by hern's long-time friend and former u.s. senator from colorado timothy wirth - handwritten date in book is 3/17/24
at some later time water was spilled on this book - it is not stained, but part of it is somewhat wrinkled from this - we do not know if this was before or after it left the possession of ms. slotkin
it was purchased by me as a used book on october 21, 2025
3/my cousin looked up the book description, correctly concluded that the author's policy prescription is population reduction (accurate enough as a first order approximation) and was horrified at the thought - horrified at the thought of intentionally reducing the number of talking apes, not at the consequences of too many hungry, hungry humans which make population de-growth seem desirable, but which she showed no signs of apprehending
3.2/the hardbound edition lists for $233.99, the paperback for $57.99 - although you can find discounted prices - i got my paperback copy for about a third of the list price, but at least one used copy, in very good condition, is now offered for less than i paid - an abstract graphic is the cover image for the hardback, but the paperback has a pelican which is still alive, but completely covered with oil from a spill
4/in another discussion, another cousin of somewhat similar age - her brother, specifically - retired from a high tech career in the military industrial complex, with seven patents to his name - seriously smart, in other words - who thinks of himself as a primarily a physicist, when the topic of weather events came up, concurred with my contention that more heat energy moving through the system made damaging weather systems more extreme, but expressed disbelief in anthropogenic global warming - "just natural variation" - given his politics, it was not surprising, but still dismaying - the last time i saw him, a year earlier, i gave him a physical copy of tom murphy's energy and human ambitions on a finite planet - assessing and adapting to planetary limits
4.3/ and yet, in the book version of his play "popcorn - three men and a garage" as an aside he tells how potential employees applying for a job at a hog slaughtering operation are shown of video of what happens there - if they sit through it then they are hired - most don't - so he is familiar, in another context, of the fact that unpleasant realities must be faced in order to deal effectively with them - he heard this from an employee at his son's "popcorn popped right off the cob" business - said to be the leading firm in that market - the product is available at amazon
Each year I live for (among other things) the appearance of a dancing cat in a blue suit. I do not know if this is comprehensible, but it is ultimately life-affirming and there for a positive thing. And my takeout food is here.
I'd have preferred Belgium 10 Balogun 9.
ReplyDeleteWell I read this post anyway. Couldn't help it.
