Who Am I To Try To Cheer Up the Self-Indulgent Universe

My compulsive response to the deadest Blog Days of Summer ever, exponentially deader than the deadest ever before (I'd like to take credit for here's decline but it's deader and getting deader everywhere), is of course to post an exceptionally self-indulgent autoblogographical bleggalgaze on a Friday, the deadest day of the week every week, and as many angry apocalyptic doomlinks I could collect since the last grid before pushing PUBLISH

I used to burn off my extra-manic impulses by pruning the blogrolls of the dying and dead and planting them in one of the two mortuary blogrolls but I've reached peak Fuck That though I assure you it has everynothing to do with the endlessly terminal ghost-towning of this particular Stringtown - it's not just here shit be dying, everynothing be dying everynowhere- and now I'd just rather bleat and bray, bleat and bray the name of my next band, here's the first album cover

Reminder: each post is a poem and each painting a headshot. In good news for me if not for you, L gave me a bag of acrylic paint tubes, this the first headshot using it (the red background), I can now go completely opaque (one can only get so opaque with gouache no matter how thick it's applied). You are warned. Hey, there's a new Water Damage album coming in October, they just released one song off it

TRULY PATHETIC

Neal Bowers

Lately, the weather aches;
the air is short of breath,
and morning stumbles in, stiff-jointed.

Day by day, the sun bores the sky,
until the moon begins
its tiresome disappearing act,
making the oceans yawn.

Even the seasons change
with a throb of weariness—
bud, bloom, leaf, fall.

If it would help,
I would paint my house silver
or sell it or buy
a red convertible.

I would, but who am I
to try to cheer up
the self-indulgent universe.

  1. 1/wonderful to have another posting so soon

2/i have formed an intention to go to the exhibition at evergreen museum in baltimore of sarah kaizer's artwork for her book Rare Air: Endangered Birds, Bats, Butterflies & Bees - it is in its last weeks there

as i lay sleepless in bed last night it came to me [a former schoolboy student of latin] that the book title is derived from ancient literature - as Wiktionary tells us about rara avis, it is an

Unadapted borrowing from Latin rāra avis (“rare bird”). The synonym rare bird is attested earlier. The term is a quotation from Satire VI (written late 1st century – early 2nd century C.E.) of the Roman poet Juvenal: “Rara avis in terris, nigroque simillima cygno [a bird as rare upon the earth as a black swan]!”

  2. i read with interest the washpost article about graceland - the album, the tour, the controversy - i want to believe, and do believe, the quote by dali tumbo

the only time paul simon and i were in the same room was in d.c. in the 21st century on the simon and garfunkel reunion tour - artie's paragraph of praise from the stage for paul made me uncomfortable, and i concluded from it that the two of them still were rubbing each other the wrong way personally, even as they performed well together - little did i know that the couple missus charley and i went with had a very painful separation in their future

  3. i was surprised to discover that ketchup slices are a real thing - they are available at walmart, your per unit cost is twenty cents per slice - one bsky comment states

PSA: ketchup contains acetic acid and sodium chloride which will both accelerate the rusting of stainless steel surfaces. Do not, I repeat do not, throw slices of ketchup on cybertrucks.

    1. alas, the 'real thing' ketchup slices offer i saw at 'walmart' was not real, but satire - although there was a brief moment in time when 'slice of sauce' was a company attempting to make money - they even appeared on 'shark tank'

my real friend from college has a real cybertruck which drove him and his wife from ohio to their winter home in arizona, and back again, in the past year, he tells me he is very satisfied with its performance - and i believe him

i wept real tears when i realized in early 2025 that this man, my oldest and most simpatico friend, was okay with trump disassembling the american system of government - life is like that - after a while i forgave him for being who he is - some hasidic rabbi said each pilgrim needs two pockets - in one is a note that says "i am but dust and ashes" - in other, "the world was created for my sake" - the trick is knowing which pocket to reach into at which time - yesterday he told me he almost certainly has prostate cancer, although the biopsy hasn't been done yet
