There Is No Rescue Mission Where It Isn't Freezing from the Need That Created It

  • Alex Chilton born 65 years ago today. Holyfuck, I love Big Star.
  • Badiou, for those of you who do, on the world post-Paris attacks.
  • Resisting the coming barbarism.
  • Saying nice things about Hillary Clinton. I can't go into details for reasons that will be obvious, and Elric and SeatSix can vouch the truth behind what necessarily will be vague, but I've an aunt, not a politico but well-ensconced and high at State who, asked again at Giftmas dinner, vouched that Hillary is indeed a good human and good soul and good manager, and my aunt, a lifelong Republican, will happily vote for Clinton.
  • When I pointed out the Clinton IS a Republican in the same sense that my aunt is a Republican, my aunt said, True.
  • I was twice email-ambushed by friends over the weekend: (1) yes, I'm not going to rehash the whole less-shittiness debate again, and (2) no, I'm not going to rehash the whole less-shittiness debate again.
  • Nature's warning system.
  • Triskelion intramurals in fuckrich Baltimore County.

VICTORY

Fanny Howe

There is no Rescue Mission where it isn’t freezing
from the need that created it. The lost children

distill to pure chemical. Where Good is called No-Tone
it’s the one who cries out who doesn’t get a coat.

The children fuse colors because they don’t want to
separate. Daughters shot off of hydrants who cut

each other in the neck and gut, don’t care
which one of them will end up later in surgery.

And drugged sons pretending to be costumes,
well, they’re not welcome to comprehension either.

Why does a wild child confuse a moon
with a hole in his skin?

One was born soaked in gin.
His first sip was from a bottle of denial.

What can “leave me alone” mean after that?
The system is settled, dimensions fixed.

Another one’s hand feels like a starfish.
Makes me hysterical like the word perestroika.

But they all dig the way the pepper is rosy in the vodka.
It’s verbocity that creates jokers.

Brick and grit are the candy and frosting
where volunteers and teachers write cards that go:

“Donate books that say NOT and NO and poets
who say Urn instead of Oh.”

How do the children convert their troubles
into hip-hop? Dunno—but it’s wonderful.

In the First Dream the Angel Was Having a Dream; in the Next Dream the Angel Still Clung to His Story

SURVEILLANCE NOTES

Bill Manhire

In Sweden, they whispered all winter,
counting the frozen minutes.
In France, they branched out. Tips of experience.
In England, they dreamed of Ireland.
In Ireland they seemed to be lonely.
Germany was Belgium then was Spain.
Italy was something else again.
Portugal, Portugal, Portugal:
they said that a lot because they never went back.
Later in Hungary, he lay on his back
and watched the clouds — so few of them
but each one big and fluffy. In the first dream
the angel was having a dream; in the next dream
the angel still clung to his story.

Some Multibody Hid His Second Exoneural Projecto-Self in a Pocket of Subspace, Masking It Over with Molecules of Landscape-Sim

  • Remember to give to WFMU during their marathon, widget over in left column. Do it for me.
  • I'm reminded that during Big News Spasms - Ukraine in this instance - Blegsylvania, at least my Stringtown in Blegsylvania, slows up. It no longer surprises me - people go to their usual and favorite big sources to keep up with latest news/assimilate their tribe's common wisdom on the event.
  • How the internet is narrowing our mindsAs our options have grown, so has the overwhelming dominance of a generic set of crowd-pleasing blockbusters. Mainstream culture, aided and abetted (or thwarted and warped) by the frenetic pace of the Internet, has fallen into a punishing pattern: a few books—the ones that win prizes, are heavily promoted, or feature at least one vampire—rake in all the media attention and readers. All others are flops. In the book economy, the middle class is dying. The idea of an eHarmony for books is similarly a way of narrowing choices in the face of an overwhelming field of options. Paradoxically, because personalization relies on shared categories, its results can flatten the real differences between individuals.

  • Philip Roth, for those of you who do.
  • Thanks to Hamster for the above and below links plus for finding me the Ashley vimeo page.

  • UPDATE! Yes yes yes, I know it's Mark E Smith's birthday today, a The Fall cascade is already in the can, will be posted later this afternoon.

DOOZEY

Albert Goldbarth

"A bun in her oven? Geez Louise, isn't that
malarkey? Estelle? Miss Goody-Two-Shoes?"
"I thought it was bunkum too,
when I heard it. Really: you coulda knocked me
for a loop. But Alice told me, and she's jake."
Alice: the provenance, the gatekeeper. So it wasn't all hooey.
It was the real goods. Aunt Ruby
hadn't shown up for her visit last month and,
well, Estelle was in a pickle, was between the proverbial
rock and its cousin the hard place, friendless,
paddleless up that famous defecatory creek and down
in the dumps, and while vernacular studies

isn't my speed, I love the way we used to talk.
We also used to say the autumn light is lambent
on the lake top, and the waves display a heraldic curl
as in halcyon days . . . and that was also a fine,
fine thing to say. Or that some multibody hid
his second exoneural projecto-self in a pocket of subspace,
masking it over with molecules of landscape-sim
. . . that's how they talk in sci-fi-ville, while over
in the empirical records of science, someone is saying
the reagent deliquesces although
in its previous state it underwent resorption. All
of the languages are appropriate to their purposes—are

fine. Jack Gilbert's poem in honor of wabi
—that's the Japanese word for, roughly,
finding a beauty in ruin that one can only
find in ruin—reminds us that to lack the word
for a concept is really to lack the concept.
Let the word occur, though, and then suddenly
in a fingersnap, in a trice, and like a bolt out of the blue,
I can see my friend for whom Estelle is an avatar
in stanza one, and the formerly unacknowledged
stores of dignity and perseverance
that carried her through the shame of the abortion
—her wabi—flower forth. One story goes

she fucked up big-time, Mick was a saint but
nooo, she had to get knocked up by an asshole
like Kenny. Another story: her mind is part dissociative, and
so requires positive reinforcement from multiple sources.
Actually they're the same story, only told in different languages.
Or actually because they're different languages, they're
different stories. In mine, she's just returned
from the doctor, and needs to tell Mick. She's sitting
surrounded by thousands of happy memories—the light
through the louvers is lambent—but we all know
how the story goes: life is jim-dandy, a peacheroo, then
words get spoken, and overnight the whole world goes kablooey.

They Find a Soul, and Their Dim Moan is Wrought into a Singing Sad and Beautiful, or: Born Sixty-Three Years Ago Today

Alex Chilton was born sixty-three days ago today. Not going to type it all out again, click the Alex Chilton and Big Star tags for other posts here on Chilton. El Goodo is probably on all of them, it's my first and favorite love. I just used one of my gift cards at the joint of one evil motherfucker on the DVD:

Love love love, but did you see, around the 2:00 mark, a blurb exclaiming that this documentary was going to introduce Big Star to a whole new generation? No, all but a very few of the whole new generation (roughly the same percentage as my old generation) will never understand the mythologizing of Alex Chilton by a few of my generation, all of us who aren't geniuses but are brighter than our stations and see in Chilton's failures to achieve his deserved super-stardom a comforting robe to warm in after another cold bath at our station, nor will the whole new generation listen to Big Star any more than almost everyone of my old generation.

  • But the music stands.
  • Today's Maqroll precept: Some things must be paid for, others must remain debts forever. That's what we believe. The trap lies in the "must." We go on paying, we go on owing, and often we don't even know it.
  • Rest in Peace, John Harvill. Yes, he was famous in Gaithersburg as the football coach, he also taught me to drive (did you know, young people, that Drivers Ed used to be offered in public schools) and lived in my neighborhood on Gaither Street and even years after I graduated he would remember my name and shake my hand. Good guy.

MOUNTAIN PINES

Robinson Jeffers

In scornful upright loneliness they stand,
Counting themselves no kin of anything
Whether of earth or sky. Their gnarled roots cling
Like wasted fingers of a clutching hand
In the grim rock. A silent spectral band
They watch the old sky, but hold no communing
With aught. Only, when some lone eagle's wing
Flaps past above their gray and desolate land,
Or when the wind pants up a rough-hewn glen,
Bending them down as with an age of thought,
Or when, 'mid flying clouds that can not dull
Her constant light, the moon shines silver, then
They find a soul, and their dim moan is wrought
Into a singing sad and beautiful.

of the cake and flesh I now have windings of as steep and left-ward twisting as those ice-rock grindings were the giant river ran over and caught where ground itself is a fucking hole

First, thanks Edmond for that Stereolab youtube yesterday. I always short-shrift Stereolab here proportional to how much I love Stereolab even though I say so again and again and say I'll post more again and again. One last Giftmas present for you. Yes, today is Alex Chilton's birthday. This week in war. But, but, she's a Democrat. See, I didn't say motherfucking Democrats, though I thought it. The hehhingOccupy, not dead, just resting? STAGE FORT PARK

Charles Olson

an ice-plug a wherry where I hid my car a nights a fucking

and they tell me this was a gore under ice where the rocks made a whirlpool

when the land was then depressed below the level

of where the sea now is but the sea was out and here

in the hole of Stage Fort Park forty feet further down and then let up was the bed

of a Merry mac as wide as Massachusetts

the earth was down from the weight of the ice upon it

and great beds of water flowing under carried detritus

was my kame and those hollows and the rise

of choke-cherry trees I have eaten my father

piece by piece I love my cannibalism

of the cake and flesh I now have windings of as steep and left-ward twisting

as those ice-rock grindings were

the giant river ran over and caught

where ground itself is a fucking hole

But Where, Oh Where Is the Holy Idiot, Truth Teller and Soothsayer, Familiar of Spirits, Rat Eater, Unhouseled Wanderer Whose Garble and Babble Fill Rich and Poor, Homeless and Housed, with Awe and Fear?

Tomorrow isn't Alex Chilton's birthday, L said at a Wednesday edition of Thursday Night Pints. I know, I said, I'm an idiot, I should have double-checked wikipedia against the birthday lists I use to remind me of these dates before asking for requests, I usually do, got busy, life is a fucking clusterfuck right now. What a shitty semester, said L, what a shitty Fall. We each recited our woes. What are you going to do about the Chilton? asked D. Play your requests tomorrow, I said. El Goodo is mine, Thank You Friends is L's, September Girls is D's, Kangaroo is mine again. K, not knowing who Alex Chilton was, was made to march to bar to retrieve a round of ridiculously priced Scotch. Jeebus, people, you drink this shit for fun? I said handing L the remainder of mine, getting up to get myself a pint.

FABLE

Tom Sleigh

But where, oh where is the holy idiot,
truth teller and soothsayer, familiar

of spirits, rat eater, unhouseled wanderer
whose garble and babble fill rich and poor,

homeless and housed, with awe and fear?
Is he hiding in the pit or walkie-talkie,

its grid of holes insatiably hungry,
almost like a baby, sucking in the police sergeant's

quiet voice as he calls in reinforcements?
Oh holy idiot, is that you sniffing the wind

for the warm turd smell on the mounted policemen
backing their horses' quivering, skittish

haunches into the demonstrators' faces?
Oh little village among the villages,

the wild man, the holy Bedlamite is gone,
and nobody, now, knows where to find him....

Lying in mud? lying caked in mud, hair elfed into knots?
Some poor mad Tom roving the heath

for a warm soft place to lie his body down,
his speech obsessed with oaths, demons,

his tongue calling forth the Foul Fiend, Flibbertigibbet
as horse back slowly, slowly into the crowd

as he eats filth, he crams his ravenous mouth with filth -
and then he sits on his stool in the trampled hay

and deep-rutted mud, he anoints himself
with ashes and clay, he puts on his crown

of fumiter weed and holds his scepter
of a smouldering poker and calls the court to order.

Invisible Man Who Can Sing in a Visible Voice

Lots of requests to honor and tomorrow is an Egoslavian High Holy Day so the music focus is set if not the songs selected and Friday and Saturday I'll be on the road, so here, now, in the order they were requested, the above requested by Hamster, the first below by anne (which is not what she requested, but I posted that song within the last month or two so have this one instead), the second below by Randal, which wasn't what he asked for which I couldn't find (or get the joke if it was a joke) though I do understand more metal.

Egoslavian High Holy Day tomorrow? Birthday of the whom the song below is named. Requests solicited, Boxtops, Big Star, solo all welcome, not requesting welcome too.
