there are so many tictoc clocks everywhere telling people what toctic time it is for tictic instance five toc minutes toc past six tic

My bleggal ethics require me, though I don't mind at all, to note the retirement of University of Maryland head basketball coach Gary Williams. I didn't go to Maryland (well, I did a year of library school at CLIS and said, Fuck that emphatically), but I had been a Maryland basketball fan since Lefty brought in Len Elmore and Tom McMillen in the early 70s until I lost interest when the one-and-dones changed the game over the past decade*. I actually don't like to root just for the uniform.

Gary took a program still grievously shocked by Len Bias' death (Len Bias was the best player I ever saw play in person) and on severe probation for rules violations by his predecessor and reestablished Maryland as the clear third best ACC program and won - with a senior/junior based team - as honest a national championship as can be when run by the NCAA racketeers. He ran a clean program, and if at 67 he still won't give handjobs to AAU coaches in exchange for access to their prima donnas but is tired of hearing how he can't win because he won't, Lefty bless him.

  • The Kindly Ones. As some asshat commented there: I loved hating it so much I still can’t stop thinking about it two months later.
  • The Kindly Ones.
  • Lit-links.
  • Terry Riley.
  • Missed.
  • Swim.
  • When I laugh.
  • Lovetown.
  • I had a bunch more songs (and lit-links and moco links and general links) but motherfucking blooger ate the post, a much more frequently happening occurrence. What the fuck? So, here's Lisa's Bennie (and a reminder to send your cats to me):

E.E. Cummings

there are so many tictoc
clocks everywhere telling people
what toctic time it is for
tictic instance five toc minutes toc
past six tic

Spring is not regulated and does
not get out of order nor do
its hands a little jerking move
over numbers slowly

   we do not
wind it up it has no weights
springs wheels inside of
its slender self no indeed dear
nothing of the kind.

(So,when kiss Spring comes
we'll kiss each kiss other on kiss the kiss
lips because tic clocks toc don't make
a toctic difference
to kisskiss you and to
kiss me)

Well, doublefuck, motherfucking youtube is broken and won't provide embedding code. Song later, or not.

  1. I followed the link to Dionne's fluff piece. And read it.

I would feel cleaner if I'd taken a bath in giraffe feces and baby tears.

    Also, thanks linkage.

  2. The president’s rhetoric has often emphasized caring, compassion and community, the language one expects from a moderately liberal politician. Yet as one of his close aides told me long ago, there is inside a very cool, tough, even hard man.

Sure, Dionne, if by "very cool, tough, even hard man" you mean an execrable right-wing plutocrap asslicker.

P.S. BDR, I've been associated with two cats in my life, but the best I'll be able to send will be pictures of the pictures (if I can find them). Max and Whack: they are missed.

  3. Agreed re: Gary Williams. As a UNC alum (and b'ball fan since the mid-60s), I remember how much I respected—and feared—Elmore & TomMc. GW re-built the franchise, and once again Heels fans feared Cole FH. Guy brought in guards that almost made us forget John Lucas, the ONLY competitor to Phil Ford. Guy put teams together. Guy put game plans together. Respect.

NCAA b'ball is better when teams like Butler prevail against the one-and-dones of Calipari et al. Team being the operant word. UNC (tho' we lose plenty to the pros, look at this year's 100% return) rarely lets me down in that respect (Who was the only man who could hold Michael Jordan to under 20 ppg? Dean Smiff). 3-point line is too close, though.

I hate NBA. Can't even watch a playoff game. Here's why: the League gets the biggest, fastest, strongest. Selection. Compare these guys to those guys who played back in, say, the Hoosiers era (film, that is). Yet they still play on the same size court with the same basket height. It's too crowded. Too much thuggery. Too much one-on-one star v. star. NBA would be a better team game if they raised the hoop to 11' or 11.5' and widened and seriously lengthened the court. Teams would have to play more like teams or they'd wear out their guys, cause they'd have to guard better. Guys would have to shoot better, too—up instead of down.

  5. I was in an airport today and touched a WaPo for the first time in years to read the stories about Gary Williams. If we all did our jobs with the skill, passion and honesty that he did his, we'd have a 5 hour work week. As Jay Bilas said a few years ago: "No one from outside of North Carolina has ever consistently competed in the ACC except for Gary Williams." I like to think he quit because he couldn't stand the thought of ever having to see another parasite AAU/agent/advisor standing next to some kid with a shot at a free education. And I wish Gary peace.

The stories were good, though I'm glad I didn't pay for the piece of shit or even glance at the Op-ed section.
