FLORIST'S ROOT CELLAR
Theodore Roethke
Nothing would sleep in that cellar, damp as a ditch,
Bulbs broke out of boxes hunting for chinks in the dark,
Shoots dangled and drooped,
Lolling obscenely from mildewed crates,
Hung down long yellow evil necks, like tropical snakes.
And what a congress of stinks! -
Roots ripe as old bait,
Pulpy stems, rank, silo-rich,
Leaf-mould, manure, lime, piled against slippery planks.
Nothing would give up life:
Even the dirt kept breathing a small breath.
spiegel reminds me of 'hearts of space' radio program which is still going i have just learned - i used to listen in late 1980s
ReplyDeleteover the weekend missus charley and i saw 'bohemian rhapsody' movie - missus charley grew up in a latin american country and heard 'somebody to love' in a translated version by a spanish group
wikipedia tells me that queen bassist john deacon retired from performing long ago, but still keeps a hand in with regard to the business affairs of the band
we were interested to learn from the movie that freddy had cats
and speaking of cats, msnbc 'morning joe' hosts joe and mika featured the finding of their lost aptly named cat 'meatball' at 7 am on their show this morning - he is a good looking cat with green eyes
this is not meatball in a previous appearance of a cat on their show

those are good looking cats in the photo above, by the way
So glad you're still around. And I'm still around.
ReplyDeleteI thought about you last week! We have a week off in mid-April, discussions at the serious point of flying to Las Vegas and hiking southern Utah national parks so thought of you near Phoenix (which I'm guessing is hours away from Las Vegas)....
DeleteHope you and yours are well and working on your art still makes you happy!
