    Actually you know when I’d finished the book my central thought-on both Quarantine and Portraits- was “almost Victorian!” which is not a slight (I grew up on the Victorians and I still sometimes have to restrain myself from sounding like a cheap imitation Dickens when I write) It’s just jarring to see contemporary fiction that posits a settled bourgeois existence integrated into one’s culture as the correct aim for a life (again, not a slight, I sometimes agree with you that we’ve gone too far in our borderline-promotion of alienation as the only proper state of existence for a thinking person.) There’s something in overarching intellectualism and the combination of Victorian and modernist elements that resembles Thomas Mann, so maybe your manifestation (Mann-ifestation?) worked
