I don’t think you (or I) imagined the intelligence in The Sandman, I just think it was something Gaiman had a finite supply of, and he expended most of it on the comic. Anyway I’m not sure it’s a lack of intelligence so much as ambition that’s the central sin of his later career anyway. Honestly I might be spitballing here but I get the sense the root of a lot of it is that Gaiman isn’t a radical the way Moore and Morrison are- he comes off as an amiable liberal to me- not a bad sort but for all that The Sandman is “woke” (in the Shapiroesque sense of positively depicting non normative and minority groups) I don’t get the sense that he has that inner fire, that rage or sadness at the pain of the world that’s probably necessary to consistently produce great art. You can have too much of it certainly, but you’ve gotta have it (or conversely you’ve gotta perversely enjoy the pain and sadness) and in his post-Sandman career I don’t get the sense that he does either.
