  1. Here's an article at Black Agenda Report on Jimmy Heath, who recently passed away.

The article reminded me of the late seventies when I was majoring in music and junior colleges had lots of money and great music programs. They had jazz arranging, jazz theory, jazz improv, two big bands, a classical music program that I was also taking on the flute. And its really sad because all that is gone with the wind now. But I suppose murder abroad takes precedence over a rewarding life any day. Fucking neoliberal assholes. I'd vote for Bernie but the rest can go fuck themselves because I wouldn't give them the time of day.

Okay, now here's something you likely won't be interested in. It's a dissertation on the music of Sonny Stitt, another famous jazz saxophonist. Critics accused him of copying Charlie Parker. Stitt claimed he developed his style without Parker's influence. I've listened to both for years and I see no reason to doubt Stitt's claim. His style is very distinct from Parker's. Since Parker influenced almost everyone at that time doubtless there was some influence but Stitt is instantly recognizable to me. At any rate here is the link in case you aren't interested.
