Sand and Snow-Capped Waves

Indulge the aargh and motherfucking vile mood by deploying this in multiple guises or lazyass blogging with lazyass snow theme. Best lazyass blogging and lazyass snow theme. Aargh and motherfucking vile mood later, or not, and probably not here but there. No, the poem will not be Stevens' Snowman, I know you think you know how I think, this sentence proves you're only part right. Click tags Beefheart, Kees, Galaxie 500 for more of each.

Also too, activating the Momcat Alert System. We haven't seen her since the storm.

UPDATE! Drove Earthgirl's car to shop for service, restocked at Safeway, just got home, deactivating the Momcat Alert System, it's uncanny and spooky how it works, it's a good thing.

UPDATE! That reduces some of the aargh, as does getting the car to shop, but can't concentrate to read either Deronda or Miss MacIntosh or more Kees, so have last night's and now's linkages:

LAND'S END

Weldon Kees

A day all blue and white, and we
Came out of woods to sand
And snow-capped waves. The sea
Rose with us as we walked, the land
Built dunes, a lighthouse, and a sky of gulls.

Here where I built my life ten years ago,
The day breaks gray and cold;
And brown surf, muddying the shore,
Deposits fish-heads, sewage, rusted tin.
Children and men break bottles on the stones.
Beyond the lighthouse, black against the sky,
Two gulls are circling where the woods begin.

Press Deeper, Touch the Little Bundle of Nerves Buried There, Buried in the Gristle, the Nerves that Make You Blink When the Light Bewilders You

  • Activating the Napoleon Alert System. Saw him Saturday, I normally wait a week without seeing him before alerting the signal but it's zero outside as I type this. Saw Momcat and Frankie this morning, they are in the shelter of straw, cardboard, and blankets we built on the back porch, but no Napoleon.
  • UPDATE! Works every time. As of 11:27 he's inside with Planet.
  • Wonderful dinner last night with Planet and Landru, the most fun thing I've done in what seems like weeks, so limited link-fishing for that, plus the death of two friends in the past week or so (both of liver cancer, fuck) occupy my mind so limited link-fishing for that, plus the hardest weeks of my work year put me in a vile mood so limited link-fishing for that too, plus a serious dose of blegitus so limited link-fishing for that too.
  • What boggles the image-nation?
  • From the above's homepage I see that Rob Payne is alive.
  • Snowden, Greenwald, journalism, progressive tone-police.
  • Taking inventory at the sex-shop.
  • Hagerstown.
  • Laughing place.
  • The Millions' Most Anticipated Books of 2014. Richard Powers! Sebald! Coover! Vollmann! Murakami! Only goes through August. Still no new Ishiguro.
  • :-P's 2013 songs.
  • Fell asleep, unsurprisingly to me in review considering the first and second bullets of this shitty post (minus the dinner with Planet and Landru), listening to Throbbing Gristle.

self-exam (my body is a cage)

Nick Flynn

Do this: take two fingers, place them on
the spot behind your ear, either

ear, the spot where your skull drops off

into that valley of muscle
& nerve—that is the muscle that holds up

the skull, that turns the dumb bone
this way & that, that nods your face up &

down when you think you
get it—press deeper, touch the little bundle of

nerves buried there, buried in
the gristle—the nerves that make you blink

when the light bewilders you, that make your tongue
slide in & out when you think you’re in

love, when you think you need a drink, touch
that spot as if you have an itch, close your eyes &

listen, please, close
your eyes—can you hear it? We think our souls live

in boxes, we think someone sits behind our eyes,
lording in his little throne, steering the fork to

the mouth, the mouth to the tit, we think
hungry children live in our bellies & run out with their

empty bowls as the food rains
down, we sometimes think we are those

hungry children, we think
we can think anything & it won’t

matter, we think we can think cut out her tongue,
& then ask her to sing.

This Time I'm Not Going to Say a Thing about Deity

Saw all three and petted two of the ferals yesterday afternoon after Sunday morning's catfights. MomCat - she's the cat in the banner above - has not sat in my lap since she did once a few months ago but runs tail-up to me and head-butts my shins. Her son Frankie is a coward, her son Napoleon has me completely trained, under the chin first, then ears, I said at a special Sunday Night Edition of Thursday Night Pints, all three of us busy in our own ways during the past week and busy possibly through November, so. I didn't realize I'd have to run a sobriety check point on the way home, said L, noting the major presence of Metro Police in Georgetown at six o'clock. A cop said, L said, when I asked him what's with all the cops, cop said always after <Racist Slurs'> games, lots of DUIs. K asked, as replays of the game ran on TVs around the bar as we sat down, what's with the <Racist Slur> uniforms, why don't they match the helmets? I said, I think they play a home game a year in the true burgundy but I thought they usually wear it with the old burgundy spear helmet. For the record, the Racial Slurs were wearing their standard darker-than-red but brighter-than-burgundy helmets with the Indian-profile logo on the side but minus the yellow stripe that runs down the middle. K said, you notice this shit? L snorted, noticed? He has a theory! True! I said, buy me a pint and I'll tell you.

  • The above two photos, long-timers can vouch, is Fleabus shot by Planet, once upon a blog every day had a Fleabus photo. I didn't ask and it didn't even occur to me to ask for new photos and it didn't occur to her this past unexpected week. All's better.
  • Fleabus is best cat ever. She has to be nine, ten, we can't remember, she might be eleven, the best cat ever. Click tag Ask Fleabus for more photos. For a lot more, click tag Ask Fleabus at old joint.
  • Planet sends these winter-housing ideas for your feral cats.
  • I said, I think Tiny Danny Snyder said, change the helmet from norm but keep the Indian-profile logo because I met this past week with NFL administrative assistant Goodell and I want to tell the world FUCK YOU! it's the <Racist Slurs'> now and forever for there is no profit in rebranding.
  • Someone with skills, please photoshop for me Tiny Danny Snyder as a Ferengi. Tiny Damon Snyder. Join me in calling the local helmetball team the Ferengi.
  • Who the fuck uses stupidass Star Trek allusion?

ACCEPTANCE SPEECH

Dean Young

This time I’m not going to say a thing
about deity. It’s not the blizzard,
it’s three days after. Trinkle from thawing
roofs, ruined crocus pronging through.
Ruin, I promise, won’t be mentioned again.
Trees, sure, still begging in the road, split
to the bole but this isn’t about the chainsaw.
A pruning saw will have to do. The puppets
aren’t hanging themselves in each other’s
strings. Everyone’s easily identifiable
beneath the funny mask. Somewhere in Oregon,
Mary has another month to go, she’s comfortable
in any position for thirty-five seconds. Lulu,
we know you’re in there but no one’s
blaming you for reluctance to come out.
Poetry is the grinding of a multiplicity
throwing off sparks, wrote Artaud
and look what that got him: toothlessness
and shock therapy. Your dad, who has the worst
teeth of anyone I know, once ordered eggplant
in a steakhouse. Do not order eggplant
in a steakhouse turned out to be more
than aphoristicly true. Do not spend a lot
of time in an asylum writing cruel poems
if you can help it, one Artaud is enough.
In Kandinsky’s Blue 2, there’s a shape
in two rows of shapes that seems okay
although to the right’s a capsized canoe
full of mathematicians, to the left a bow
about to launch the killer astrolabe.
By what manner is the soul joined to
the body? How about climbing a ladder
of fire? No thanks. On TV, a rhino’s
lying in some red dust, munching a thorn.
You wouldn’t think he could ejaculate
for half an hour straight, but you’d be wrong.
See that cloud, it might weigh 10,000 pounds
which is about average for a cloud.
Happy birthday, happy birthday to you.
Tony says Mary is always writing about the sacred.
Talcum powder, binoculars, this decimated
planet. I know, a promise has been made
but Tony’s been sick for years and no one
knows with what. Flax oil, bark tinctures,
corticosteroids. He’s not exactly someone
you’d trust to drive your car, but still.
Something awful’s coming, isn’t it?
Would it help if I said Amen?

Held Up to a Mirror, He Writhed

  • Was going to delete last night's KITH post (which I couldn't resist posting when I thought of it, it made me giggle multiplied by my attention sluttery) and post the two skits in this post, but Landru commented this morning so you get two extra Julie Doiron songs, why Doiron today explained below.
  • I'm fascinated by the greenwald effect, the visceral reactions any mention of Glenn Greenwald provoke and provoke from 360 degrees. I confess, beyond my own pleasurable scratching of my own faux dissidence regarding transference of tribal jones first onto a totem and then hysterically off that totem, it's fun to whack a wasp nest (which is the second point of this bullet): while the first was my primary intent, the second I knew would entertain me. Greenwald has become - by whose design, by what dynamics, your theories are your theories, your ratios your ratios - a political lightning rod himself of which one must have an opinion and be judged - most times harshly, regardless of respective position on the greenwald spectrum, both vitriolic hate towards and vehement defensive love for. He's black licorice. Nobody seems neutral (at least in the Stringtowns I hang out in). Greenwald, regardless of the importance of what his work has or hasn't revealed and may or not still reveal, is a hotter button than any scandal of whatever he has or hasn't enabled. This isn't to damn anyone for any opinion they have on Greenwald or suggest it isn't held in good faith for valid reasons. I just find the phenomenon interesting.
  • UPDATE: Fucked, baby.
  • One thing this kabuki achieved is the thorough demonizing of the Tea Party, so thorough that when the attacks come on the safety net by Obama/Dems those of us who will protest and make noises about primarying DINOs will be relentlessly compared to the thoroughly demonized Tea Party. Obama will urged to abandon his far left base and heavily praised unto his legacy when he does.
  • Oh my, Zizek says what I said day before yesterday: What is the ongoing U.S. government shutdown really about? In the middle of April 2009, I was taking a rest in a hotel room in Syracuse, N.Y. and jumping between two channels: a PBS documentary on Pete Seeger, the great American country singer of the Left, and a Fox News report on a country singer of the anti-tax “Tea Party,” who was performing a populist, anti-Obama song full of complaints about how Washington is taxing the hard-working ordinary people to finance the rich Wall Street financiers. There was the weird similarity between the two singers. Formulating an anti-establishment populist complaint against both the exploitative rich and the government, they called for radical measures, including civil disobedience. It was another painful reminder that today’s radical-populist Right strangely reminds us of the old radical-populist Left. Are today’s Christian survivalist-fundamentalist groups, with their half-illegal status, seeing the main threat to their freedom in the oppressive state apparatus, not similar to the Black Panthers back in the 1960s? He then goes Thomas Frank and asks What's the Matter with Kansas?
  • Of course the NSA is involved with the Drone Wars. Who didn't think so?

METAPHYSICAL DOG

Frank Bidart

Belafont, who reproduced what we did
not as an act of supine

imitation, but in defiance -

butt on couch and front legs straddling
space to rest on an ottoman, barking till

his masters clean his teeth with dental floss.

How dare being
give him this body.

Held up to a mirror, he writhed.

But He Oughtn't Meddle with the Powder Puffs on the Golf Links - They Have Their Own Goats to Tame, Dirigibles to Situate

Holyfuck, Lonnie Holley, what a voice. ALSO! Deactivating the Napoleon Alert System. Freaking uncanny. Earthgirl can vouch. God Cat demands an immediate Woot the Fuck post, new here, not the tribute to God Cat, the unabashed Woot.

Also, Seneca today:

1:9 = 433343333
10:18 = 343334333
19:27 = 353343333

Mind, every basket in 1:18 was in A, but since Seneca went from 18 to 27 baskets I have never broke 90. Missed one putt all day. I should not play for weeks at a time more often. Having never broke 90 at Seneca before I never thought to offer wootribute to God Disc, but for those putts that clanged down and not out? I don't know if demands an immediate Woot the Fuck post but it's getting one now and from now on.

A VAGABOND

Jame Tate

A vagabond is a newcomer
in a heap of trouble.
He’s an eyeball at a peephole
that should be electrocuted.
He’s a leper in a textile mill
and likely to be beheaded, I mean,
given a liverwurst sandwich
on the break by the brook
where the loaves are sliced.
But he oughtn’t meddle
with the powder puffs on the golf links—
they have their own goats to tame,
dirigibles to situate.
He can act like an imbecile
if the climate is propitious,
a magnate of kidnap
paradising around the oily depot,
or a speck from a distant nebula
wishing to purchase a certain skyscraper ....

Well, if it’s permitted, then
let’s regulate him, let’s testify
against his thimble, and moderate his gloves
before they sew an apron.

The local minister is thinking
of moving to Holland, exchanging
his old ballads for some lingerie.
“Zatso!” says the vagabond.
Homeless, like wheat that tattletales
on the sermon, like wages swigged.
“Zatso, zatso, zatso!” cries the vagabond.
The minister reels under the weight
of his thumbs, the vagabond seems to have
jutted into his kernel, disturbed
his terminal core. Slowly, and with
trifling dignity, the minister removes
from his lapel his last campaign button:
Don’t Mess with Raymond, New Hampshire.

But for Real Accomplishment, It Would Be Well If You Would Go to Live Solitary in a Forest Silence

  • Activating the Napoleon Alert System. Haven't seen him since last Sunday, and this absence feels different than others. Earthgirl said so first while I was just thinking it. The neighborhood listserv is alive with two possible pertinent issues. First, there are roving gangs of raccoons the size of pitbulls that roam through the neighbor at dusk terrorizing humans and animals alike. Second, some kids, who have not been put to death despite my urging, were caught torturing cats in Rock Creek Park. I've urged their parents to move them to a witness-protection like disappearance.
  • Bleggalgazing.
  • 45 of the 136 blogs in Because the First haven't updated in more than a month.
  • 61 of the 140 blogs in Because the Second haven't updated in more than a month.
  • The History of Fear, part one and part two.
  • Syria PSYOPs.
  • Ivory towers and reflective powers.
  • Fishing for informants.
  • Maggie's weekly links.
  • New Inquiry's Sunday reads.
  • Again with the Xenakis:

  • Happy Birthday Ilse!
  • Strangeness and poetry.
  • Calibrations.
  • He will never understand.
  • Pynchon's Mrs Dalloway.
  • I'm 2/3rd done with Bleeding Edge. I won't say it sucks. I will say if it wasn't Pynchon I would have set it aside a hundred pages ago. I long ago gave up the moral standard that once I start a novel I am obliged to finish it. Pynchon has earned the right to be finished, but it is hard to believe this is the same author that wrote Against the Day.
  • I was flipping channels Friday waiting to go out to dinner, saw an hour of Breaking Bad, an episode from season three, first time I ever saw one. Admittedly, I didn't know the background, the characters, the build-up, but holyfuck, suck. So glad people will be shutting the fuck up about it after tonight.
  • Horrifying headline.

CALLIGRAPHY ACCOMPANIED BY THE MOOD OF A CALM BUT DEFINITIVE MOOD

Dick Allen

Make your strokes thus: the horizontal:
as a cloud that slowly drifts across the horizon;
the vertical: as an ancient but strong vine stem;
the dot: a falling rock;
and learn to master the sheep leg, the tiger’s claw,
an apricot kernel, a dewdrop, the new moon,

the wave rising and falling. Do these
while holding your arm out above the paper
like the outstretched leg of a crane.
The strength of your hand
will give the stroke its bone.
But for real accomplishment, it would be well
if you would go to live solitary in a forest silence,
or beside a river flowing serenely.
It might also be useful
to look down a lonesome road,
and for the future
to stare into the gray static of a television screen,
or when lost in a video game
to accept you may never reach the final level,
where the dragon awaits, guarding the pot of gold,
and that you’ve left no footprints, not a single one,
despite all your adventures,
anyone following you could ever follow.

I Don't Know What It Is but There's Definitely Something Going On Upstairs

Most importantly, with always astonished celebration, I deactivate the Napoleon Alert System, he's home, happy. It has worked every time so far (see how I couched that), within 24 hours, sometimes less than 12, Earthgirl can vouch, though she can't vouch though I can it's the deactivation post and praise to Cat God that pleases Cat God most. Or at least me too most, fine metaphors abounding. Also, forgive me, I love Nick Cave's music, tomorrow's his birthday, if you have requests get them in please.

What Is Behind It? - Space, Plenty of Empty Space. And Who Is Talking Now? - A Man Asleep Under His Hat.

That's the photo I wanted to post the other day but pulled down because I fucked up the coding and photos displayed differently than before. It's looking east from Grove Church Road, Martinsburg Ohio, between Sycamore and Deal Rds, at 7:45 Sunday morning September 15, 2013 just after we'd abandoned our daughter at college. As I've written dozens of times, for over two years now I've been unable to change anything at this blog that requires the use of the Apply to Template button: I can't change colors, fonts, font sizes, layout, column widths, etc. Until I accidentally deleted a <div> code in a post earlier this week and ignored Blogger's warning and pushed publish anyway, when I posted photos wider than the center column the photos bled over the right blogroll, but since I fucked up the blogroll now lays over the photos. Laid. Fuck that, fuck it, fuck this. Right blogroll has been moved to left blogroll. The cemetery and soccer blogrolls have been killed. The number of blogs displaying in each individual blogroll has been reduced to the ten most recently updated. Since fewer and fewer people are updating their blogs you may not even notice even if you are one of the few who link out from the page, and if you are you can always click the Show All button at the bottom of each blogroll. My apologies for the inconvenience, but I was choking here between the two columns. Also, it's been five days since we've seen him, I usually wait a week, but Earthgirl has asked me to activate the Napoleon Alert System.

  • Another reason for the change, an unimpeded signal.
  • Multiplying in a column M by F.
  • And youtubes will be bigger too.
  • Neoliberalism depends upon and rewards one form of neurosis.
  • Grand Theft Auto and the extinction of being.
  • All linkedin and nowhere to go.
  • Krugman's obamapostasy will never be ready. Last time. Call me when Krugman writes a column asking why Democrats/Obama peg their shittiness to GOP shittiness. He knows why.
  • Obama's "I am not a crook," moment.
  • On the Ayn Rand apostle who called Lloyd Blankenfeld holier than Mother Teresa.
  • I'm 80 pages into Bleeding Edge and more than meh, but not by much. I haven't read that review yet, btw, or any review (I want to read the book first) though I did read Kakutani's, I knew she'd hate it, knew she'd misread it.
  • Psalm to be read with closed eyes.
  • Breakfast with Thom Gunn.
  • Bright day.
  • Elliot Carter's Changes.
  • Was going to post two more fever songs - I'm fine, this turned out to be, so far, fingers crossed, an intense but only 48 hour drive-by cold - this first song, serendipitously, posted here hours before SeatSix sent me a playlist in the middle of the night for Johnette Napolitano for her birthday tomorrow, he being a HUGE Concrete Blonde fan. I like, not love, but do love this song, especially with a 103 degree fever. Longtimers, hearing the below Concrete Blonde song, can probably guess what song's below the poem.

TAPESTRY

Charles Simic

It hangs from heaven to earth.
There are trees in it, cities, rivers,
small pigs and moons. In one corner
the snow falling over a charging cavalry,
in another women are planting rice.

You can also see:
a chicken carried off by a fox,
a naked couple on their wedding night,
a column of smoke,
an evil-eyed woman spitting into a pail of milk.

What is behind it?
—Space, plenty of empty space.

And who is talking now?
—A man asleep under his hat.

What happens when he wakes up?
—He’ll go into a barbershop.
They’ll shave his beard, nose, ears, and hair,
To make him look like everyone else.

Listen as the Fireflies Organize

I've no idea why Jeff Bezos bought the Washington Post nor do I know what it means. I'm guessing (a) that not much will happen short term while Bezos' management teams figure out what's broken and how they think they can fix it and (b) I doubt Bezos guillotines every fucker on Fred Hiatt's scribble page which I would pay to see. I post this particular article about it because, if you scroll to the bottom and look at the author photo, there seems to be a consistency in Andrews' face-mullets. OK, here's another one, the column's key bullet: Bezos has enormous political interests in Washington. How much will the Post’s editorial operations become a megaphone for his libertarian views and for Amazon’s business interests? Oh dear. Oh, have another theory why Bezos bought the Post, the most logical I've seen. In the meantime, Fuckface Hiatt says the Disposition Matrix and Tuesday Kill Lists prove Obama isn't serious about the War on Terror. Frank Rich has his obamapostasy? No, though he's angry, gosh darn it. He also bumps the Elizabeth Warren as savior meme. I earnestly hope Elizabeth Warren gains enough power by disobeying/fighting the Democratic establishment to seriously frightened the Democratic establishment into trying to break/demonize/demolish Warren and she continues to fight back. I can't see it happening though it would please me to be wrong, to watch the carnage. (UPDATE: Cilizza jumps on Warren train.) And Rich once bumped the Obama as savior meme too. But look, I don't have a solution. I'm told I need restate my Tug-of-War Theory: I don't buy my Tug-of-War Theory anymore, or I buy it but refuse to tug, I'm expected to tug, my tugging is built into my tugging's defeat as I'm tugging my double not the puppeteers. The blimps of Aberdeen. The vote was 6 yay, 0 nay, on the new header. I confess I like the way it seems to bleed and soften a line I never liked. Still, Momcat will return now and then, sometimes but hopefully not often when I need activate the Momcat Emergency Signal. All three ferals now are always in the yard we when pull up, there's construction in the neighborhood nearby so there are strangers and loud noises so they are often spooked, but they also need more food in the summer while they bake and sleep all day than they do in dead winter when it's below freezing, seems counter-intuitive, oh well. SeatSix sends me word that DC United is raising our ticket prices 15% for a team with three wins. United is raising prices on all LOUD SIDE! seats except for the supporters groups. United must be sure the stadium deal is sealed, it's starting before shovels hit the ground to destroy LOUD SIDE! - the supporters groups will be shunted to an end zone in a new stadium, the sections currently behind the supporters groups will be the highest priced in a new stadium, this is the beginning of the weeding out of those who won't pay. It once would have saddened me that I wasn't more anguished at how easy this choice will be. Oh, and Fuck United. Early indications from Landru and SeatSix suggest they will adopt the Fuck United. Also, I should mention MLS' contribution to my growing Fuck United sentiment. Actual drunkenposten (as opposed to this which reads as if drunkenposten but isn't). But since I'm here, in the battle between fuck it and fuck this, fuck this is pushing out to a lead (readers may concur), though the aim of this post's format is to give each equal opportunity. If you're happy and you know it kick some butt. Also, PTOOFF! A reminder that the proposed Purple Line pisses off the Columbia Country Club. Half a mile from the house I grew up in. I've read six of the books on this list of modern technology and fiction, which I post mostly to ask, has anyone heard of anything new in the pipeline from Richard Powers? An autistic perspective in novels?  Confidently inept at blackjack. And what about Sopwith Camel? No one has yet claimed my second copy of Vollmann's Fathers and Crows so those few of you who have claimed books recently can now put in your claim. American fiction's racial landscape? Hamster emailed, Bonnie Prince Billy tickets for Rams Head in Annapolis on sale today! I read he doesn't get poetry in an essay by him Poetry Magazine. Pascal Dusapin etude. I never got the Elliott Smith bug but some of you did so have some songs for his birthday. I am enraptured with the collected Ceravolo, I know myself, I know it's not an accident I write a paragraph like this in response to his spare, taut lines.

SPRING IN THIS WORLD OF POOR MUTTS

Joseph Ceravolo

I kiss your lips
on a grain: the forest

the fifth, how many do
you want on here?
This is the same you
I kiss, you hear
me, you help:

I'm thirty years old.
I want to think in summer now.
Here is goes, here it's summer

(A disintegrated robot)
over us.
We are mortal. We ride
the merry-go-round. A drummer like
this is together.
Let's go feel the water.
                   Here it goes!

Again and it's morning "boom"
                             autumn
"boom" autumn
and the corn is sleeping.
It is sleeping and sweating
and draws the beautiful
soft green sky.

Walk home with the
animal on my shoulder
to the river, the river gets
deeper, the Esso gets
deeper; morning,
              morning,
              cigarette,
family and animal
and parents along the river.
Oh imagination. That's how I need you.

A flying duck or an antler refrains.
The small deer at the
animal farm walks up
to us.

A waterbug comes into
the bathroom.
The north sky is frozen over
like a river.
Like a pimple a waterbug
comes into us
and our lives are full
of rivers. Heavy waterbug!

This is the robot and he
continues across the street.
Looking at a bird
his penis is hanging down;
a wind for
its emotions.
      I don't want to sleep.
The cold around my arms.
Like an iron lung.
As sleep comes closer to the robot's
emotion. Iron.

Spring. Spring. Spring....
                      Spring!
Spring down! come down!
There is goes! There it goes!
Arm belly strike.
Press friend push.
Teeth cruel arrow. I cannot
do without,
without do I cannot, Spring.

Chrome gladly press.
Between me, my wings. Listen as
the fireflies organize.
O save me, the Spring, please!
Before I hurt here
             I hurt her only life
             too much
and it carries in this
iron bug crawling all around.
             Is this Spring?
and it carries me,
iron bug, through the Spring.

Unless You Walk into It Freely, and with Open Despairing Eyes, You Can't Even See the Windows

  • Napoleon Alert System Activated. It's been since early Monday morning since any of us has seen him.
  • UPDATE! Works every time. Deactivating Napoleon Alert System
  • Wilfully Obscure reminded me yesterday of The Nobodys.
  • The music if fine, but since I hadn't thought of them in at least two decades it reminded me that I was young once, though you may not believe it.
  • Remember when mocking Michelle Malkin was Left Blegsylvania's most satisfying gag? Someone named Melissa Harris Perry scolded Edward Snowden for being - get this - an attention slut. Regardless of what confidential information Snowden reveals, the real value of the Snowden Affair - sorry, I keep repeating myself - is in the reaction not only of Power but in Power's liberal propagandists' behavior. Melissa Harris Perry - whoever the fuck she is, I'm told she's a load - is pissed Snowden's attention sluttery is eclipsing her attention sluttery, and Melissa Harris Perry is right.
  • I say this with full admittance - my constant admittance - of my attention sluttery.
  • Q&A w/Greenwald. I must confess, the visceral hatred of Greenwald by the professional Left propagandists fascinates me on sooooooooo many levels.
  • Lesson learned: don't weaponize your sidewalk. But yes, I've not mentioned the Zimmerman trial much because what can be said about a country where a murdered black kid is put on trial for his own murder?
  • Twenty-four hour moratorium on further comment self-imposed.
  • This will be an exceptionally slow day here in smaller Stringtowns as most everyone goes to Stringtown's bleggal overlords to keep up with the story.

[LETTER TO GARY BUTTONE]

Jack Spicer

Dear Gary,

Somehow your letter was no surprise (and I think you knew that it was no surprise or you would have tried to break the news more gently); somehow I think we understand what the other is going to say long before we say it—a proof of love and, I think, a protection against misunderstanding. So I've been expecting this letter for five weeks now—and I still don't know how to answer it.

Bohemia is a dreadful, wonderful place. It is full of hideous people and beautiful poetry. It is a hell full of windows into heaven. It would be wrong of me to drag a person I love into such a place against his will. Unless you walk into it freely, and with open despairing eyes, you can't even see the windows. And yet I can't leave Bohemia myself to come to you—Bohemia is inside of me, in a sense is me, was the price I paid, the oath I signed to write poetry.

I think that someday you'll enter Bohemia—not for me (I'm not worth the price, no human being is), but for poetry—to see the windows and maybe blast a few yourself through the rocks of hell. I'll be there waiting for you, my arms open to receive you.

But let's have these letters go on, whether it be days, years, or never before I see you. We can still love each other although we cannot see each other. We will be no farther apart when I'm in Berkeley than we were when I was in Minneapolis. And we can continue to love each other, by letter, from alien worlds.

   Love,
   Jack

Deactivating the Napoleon and Momcat Emergency System

They were home when Earthgirl got home an hour ago. Turned it on last night, works every time, it's freaking cool and uncanny. Regular tag-line restored.

My apologies, tomorrow's Terry Riley post tonight is the second blogfart of the week. This time it was motherfucking blooger, the schedule on dashboard says publish this date 2014. THIS is the attention-slutting, blogwhoring, Baal-beseeching Sunday evening post.

This is an activation of the Napoleon and Momcat Emergency System, both beacons and script. Neither has been seen since Tuesday and Wednesday some motherfucking asshole who lives two blocks away neighborhood-listserved that he was going to call the county about two black feral cats and ridding the neighborhood of the vermin. These activations of the Napoleon and Momcat Emergency System have always worked in the past, but I will gut with a grapefruit-spoon the motherfucker if my cats aren't home by Tuesday.

Trolling and Trawling and Crawfishing and Crabbing

I'm keeping the name of the blog and will still byline and comment as BDR, but in the space of thirty seconds yesterday I decided to type in my name (it's weird, I'm hesitant this time) - Jeff Popovich - just before a half-hour appointment I couldn't avoid so to prevent me from changing my mind in the minutes before someone might read it. Beyond my prime explanation yesterday (that I'm nobody, that no one gives a shit, if I was someone of interest I would have many more readers witnessing me digitally self-incriminate myself shamelessly here, there, everywhere, and Corporate knows how to find me if its bots register word algorithms here that signal me as a threat), the immediate catalyst was the discovery that someone I dearly love who is much shier and much more private than me posts her art and signs her name, if she can, I can, I impulsively thought. I'd been thinking about this for months. I'm still working out the other reasons: they remain fascinatingly mysterious to me, multi-faceted, both ambitious and cowardly, I'll get back to you or not, you only think you get autobiography here, you've no idea how much I'd need give to explain. What this is not: it is not a call for others to end their anonymity nor an assertion of moral bravery on my part vis a vis anyone else. As with everything here, there, and everywhere, it's all about me. It had nothing to do with anyone who reads or links to or blogrolls this blog though it did have something to do with the stupid King of Anarchist contests raging since the infinitesimal paradigm shift: now that some on the professional left have moved towards obamapostasy it's vital for some - me included, of course - to remain lefter than thou. Yes, it has to do with what I do with this shitty blog. Yes, I realize this is only interesting to me. Plus, if someone gets what I did yesterday with the reveal and echoing Wright opening line, they'll know my name for a second then forget both the name and the gag.

The Nights Electrocute My Fugitive

  • Was looking for the photo for the gag below, found that Planet photo of Fleabus in the same folder.  Fleabus, my favorite cat ever, she's eight now, she's still astonishing, this photo is six, seven years old, she still smiles like that, is fatter now like you and you and me. I've asked Planet for new Fleabus photos, we'll see.
  • While I like the MomCat banner on the page, it's actually the MomCat Signal activated - see, it says so up there: since she crawled into my lap Friday night no one has seen her. Fine metaphors abounding are not always - are as often enough not - a good thing.
  • Today's monologue is actually yesterday's theme song. I couldn't wait.
  • My name, by the way, is Jeff Popovich - you could have found out if you'd wanted, I'd dropped enough clues, and you could have asked and I'd told you - and I'm nobody. The anonymity was never to hide but to signify.
  • Let me get this out of the way: Ratfucking Obama, ratfucking Obama, ratfucking Obama, that's it until the next new level of the ratfucking you know Obama's enjoying. But.... Cuccinelli!
  • Who has a running mate who couldn't more please Democratic Party central scripting, funny that.

  • We saw the new Star Trek movie Friday night, Indian food then movie with Earthgirl and Planet. I haven't seen the first one so I'm unclear and unconcerned about the timeline shift thingee re: millions upon millions of dollars on production to get to the reverse scene I'll not spoil here, but here's my takeaway: they spent millions and millions of dollars to get to the Bone's I'm a doctor, dammit, not a torpedo mechanic line, plus this was seed-bedding the product line.
  • I swore off stupid-ass Star Trek allusions when professional progressive Yglesias lectured me on Star Trek, not Star Trek itself, and why should I let a motherfucking professional progressive keep me from posting stupid-ass Star Trek allusions I was asked, it won't forever, I said, in fact I give up now.

AT THE EXECUTED MURDERER'S GRAVE

James Wright

1

My name is James A. Wright, and I was born
Twenty-five miles from this infected grave,
In Martins Ferry, Ohio, where one slave
To Hazel-Atlas Glass became my father.
He tried to teach me kindness. I return
Only in memory now, aloof, unhurried,
To dead Ohio, where I might lie buried,
Had I not run away before my time.
Ohio caught George Doty. Clean as lime,
His skull rots empty here. Dying’s the best
Of all the arts men learn in a dead place.
I walked here once. I made my loud display,
Leaning for language on a dead man’s voice.
Now sick of lies, I turn to face the past.
I add my easy grievance to the rest:

   2

Doty, if I confess I do not love you,
Will you let me alone? I burn for my own lies.
The nights electrocute my fugitive,
My mind. I run like the bewildered mad
At St. Clair Sanitarium, who lurk,
Arch and cunning, under the maple trees,
Pleased to be playing guilty after dark.
Staring to bed, they croon self-lullabies.
Doty, you make me sick. I am not dead.
I croon my tears at fifty cents per line.

   3

Idiot, he demanded love from girls,
And murdered one. Also, he was a thief.
He left two women, and a ghost with child.
The hair, foul as a dog’s upon his head,
Made such revolting Ohio animals
Fitter for vomit than a kind man’s grief.
I waste no pity on the dead that stink,
And no love’s lost between me and the crying
Drunks of Belaire, Ohio, where police
Kick at their kidneys till they die of drink.
Christ may restore them whole, for all of me.
Alive and dead, those giggling muckers who
Saddled my nightmares thirty years ago
Can do without my widely printed sighing
Over their pains with paid sincerity.
I do not pity the dead, I pity the dying.

   4

I pity myself, because a man is dead.
If Belmont County killed him, what of me?
His victims never loved him. Why should we?
And yet, nobody had to kill him either.
It does no good to woo the grass, to veil
The quicklime hole of a man’s defeat and shame.
Nature-lovers are gone. To hell with them.
I kick the clods away, and speak my name.

   5

This grave’s gash festers. Maybe it will heal,
When all are caught with what they had to do
In fear of love, when every man stands still
By the last sea,
And the princes of the sea come down
To lay away their robes, to judge the earth
And its dead, and we dead stand undefended everywhere,
And my bodies—father and child and unskilled criminal—
Ridiculously kneel to bare my scars,
My sneaking crimes, to God’s unpitying stars.

   6

Staring politely, they will not mark my face
From any murderer’s, buried in this place.
Why should they? We are nothing but a man.

   7

Doty, the rapist and the murderer,
Sleeps in a ditch of fire, and cannot hear;
And where, in earth or hell’s unholy peace,
Men’s suicides will stop, God knows, not I.
Angels and pebbles mock me under trees.
Earth is a door I cannot even face.
Order be damned, I do not want to die,
Even to keep Belaire, Ohio, safe.
The hackles on my neck are fear, not grief.
(Open, dungeon! Open, roof of the ground!)
I hear the last sea in the Ohio grass,
Heaving a tide of gray disastrousness.
Wrinkles of winter ditch the rotted face
Of Doty, killer, imbecile, and thief:
Dirt of my flesh, defeated, underground.

There's Just No Accounting for Happiness, or the Way It Turns Up Like a Prodigal

Lordy, my ears are lustful, so easily and insatiably satisfied sluts. If only my eyes, my Kind were so sloppy - I've doses of tsundoku and smallness.

In bigger news, MomCat (the mother of the brood of ferals that moved into our shed seven years ago), after years of first running away when seen to cautiously holding her ground to curiously approaching before running away to brazenly asking for breakfast to letting me scratch her back when she eats last night happily and eagerly crawled into my lap:

HAPPINESS

Jane Kenyon

There’s just no accounting for happiness,
or the way it turns up like a prodigal
who comes back to the dust at your feet
having squandered a fortune far away.

And how can you not forgive?
You make a feast in honor of what
was lost, and take from its place the finest
garment, which you saved for an occasion
you could not imagine, and you weep night and day
to know that you were not abandoned,
that happiness saved its most extreme form
for you alone.

No, happiness is the uncle you never
knew about, who flies a single-engine plane
onto the grassy landing strip, hitchhikes
into town, and inquires at every door
until he finds you asleep midafternoon
as you so often are during the unmerciful
hours of your despair.

It comes to the monk in his cell.
It comes to the woman sweeping the street
with a birch broom, to the child
whose mother has passed out from drink.
It comes to the lover, to the dog chewing
a sock, to the pusher, to the basketmaker,
and to the clerk stacking cans of carrots
in the night.
It even comes to the boulder
in the perpetual shade of pine barrens,
to rain falling on the open sea,
to the wineglass, weary of holding wine.
